Saving & Reusing Templates
Templates streamline your workflow by letting you reuse well-designed blocks across lessons and courses. Here’s the full workflow from saving to inserting.
Saving a template
Section titled “Saving a template”- Build and configure a block exactly how you want it
- Click the bookmark icon in the block header
- Give the template a descriptive name
- Click Save Template
The template captures everything about the block: its type, text content, images, settings, and any nested content (like accordion panels or tab items). Template names can be up to 100 characters.
Browsing your templates
Section titled “Browsing your templates”Open the lesson editor and click the Templates tab in the left sidebar. Your templates are listed with their names and block type icons, making it easy to find the one you need.
Inserting a template
Section titled “Inserting a template”You can insert a template in two ways:
From the sidebar
Section titled “From the sidebar”Click any template in the Templates tab to append it to the end of the current lesson.
Between blocks
Section titled “Between blocks”- Hover between any two blocks in the lesson editor
- Click the + button that appears
- Open the My Templates submenu in the dropdown
- Select the template to insert it at that position
Templates create independent copies
Section titled “Templates create independent copies”Every time you insert a template, Slate creates a completely independent copy of the block. The inserted block has no connection to the template or to other blocks created from the same template.
This means you can freely edit inserted blocks without affecting the template. It also means that if you update a template, previously inserted copies won’t change.
Tips for using templates effectively
Section titled “Tips for using templates effectively”- Name templates descriptively - use names that describe the content, not just the block type (e.g., “Safety Warning Banner” instead of “Text”)
- Save fully configured blocks - set up all content, formatting, and settings before saving
- Use templates for consistency - save blocks that should look the same across courses, like headers, disclaimers, or standard quiz formats
