Block Templates
Block templates let you save any block (with all its content and settings) as a reusable template you can insert into any course. They’re useful for content you use frequently, like a standard disclaimer, a branded header layout, or a consistently formatted knowledge check.
How templates work
Section titled “How templates work”When you save a block as a template, Slate captures the block’s type and all its content. When you insert that template into a lesson, Slate creates a fully independent copy. Changes to the inserted block don’t affect the original template, and updating the template doesn’t change previously inserted copies.
Templates are available across all your courses, not just the one where they were created.
Saving a block as a template
Section titled “Saving a block as a template”- In the lesson editor, find the block you want to save
- Click the bookmark icon in the block header
- Enter a name for the template (defaults to the block type name)
- Click Save Template
All 18 block types can be saved as templates, including blocks with nested content like accordions, tabs, layouts, and card carousels.
Template library
Section titled “Template library”Your saved templates appear in the Templates tab of the lesson editor sidebar. The list shows all your templates with their names and block type icons.
If you haven’t saved any templates yet, the tab displays a hint explaining how to get started.
Managing templates
Section titled “Managing templates”Each template in the list has a more options menu where you can:
- Rename - change the template name
- Delete - permanently remove the template
Deleting a template doesn’t affect any blocks that were previously inserted from it.
