Image Editing

Slate includes a built-in image cropping tool so you can adjust images without switching to an external editor.

  1. Select an Image block that already has an image
  2. Click the Crop option
  3. The crop dialog opens with your image

In the crop dialog, you can:

  • Drag the image to reposition it within the crop area
  • Zoom in or out using the zoom slider
  • Set an aspect ratio to constrain the crop proportions

Click Apply to save the cropped version or Cancel to discard changes.

Choose from preset aspect ratios to ensure your cropped image fits your layout:

RatioUse case
FreeNo constraint, crop to any shape
16:9Widescreen, hero images
4:3Standard content images
1:1Square images
3:2Photography-style images
2:3Tall portrait images

The default is Free, which lets you crop to any proportions.

If you want to undo a crop, hover over the image and click the Reset button. This restores the original uncropped image immediately. You can re-crop from the original at any time.

When you apply a crop, Slate generates a new version of the image with only the selected area. The original image is preserved, so you can always re-crop or reset to the full image.

Animated GIFs cannot be cropped, since cropping would break the animation.
