Claude Desktop
Connect the Slate MCP Connector to Claude Desktop to create and manage courses through conversation.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- Claude Desktop installed
- A Slate account on a Standard or Pro plan
Step 1: Open settings
Section titled “Step 1: Open settings”Click your profile icon in Claude Desktop, then select Settings.
Step 2: Go to Connectors
Section titled “Step 2: Go to Connectors”Select Connectors from the settings menu, then click Add custom connector.
Step 3: Add Slate
Section titled “Step 3: Add Slate”Enter Slate as the name and use this URL:

Section titled “Step 4: Authorize on first use”When you first ask Claude to use Slate, you’ll be prompted to sign in to your Slate account. You only need to do this once.
Verify the connection
Section titled “Verify the connection”After authorizing, try asking Claude:
“Check my Slate credit balance”
If everything is connected, Claude will use the check_credits tool and report your current balance.
Example prompts
Section titled “Example prompts”Once connected, you can start building:
- “Create a 30-minute onboarding course for new hires”
- “List all my courses tagged with compliance”
- “Preview the outline for a cybersecurity awareness course”
- “How many open reviews do I have?”
- “Create a tracked link for my Sales Training course”
Permissions
Section titled “Permissions”When Claude first connects to Slate, you’ll see a permissions screen listing all available tools in two categories:
- Read-only tools - safe to allow automatically (checking credits, listing courses, etc.)
- Write tools - you can choose to allow automatically or require approval each time (creating courses, managing links, etc.)
You can change these settings anytime from Claude Desktop’s connector preferences.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”Claude doesn’t show Slate tools - make sure the connector URL is exactly https://mcp.slatebuilder.io/mcp with no trailing slash or extra characters.
Authorization fails - check that your Slate account has an active Standard or Pro subscription.
Tools return errors - you may have hit a rate limit. Ask Claude to check your credits or try again in a minute. See Usage & Limits for rate limit details.
