Interface Overview
Slate has two main screens: the dashboard where you manage your courses, and the course editor where you build content.
Dashboard
Section titled “Dashboard”The dashboard is your home screen. It shows all your courses and provides tools to organize them.
Course list
Section titled “Course list”Courses appear as cards in a grid (or rows in list view). Each card shows the course title, last updated date, section and lesson counts, and any tags. Switch between grid and list view using the toggle in the toolbar.
Search and filters
Section titled “Search and filters”- Search - find courses by title, description, ID, or tag. Press
/to focus the search field. - Tags - filter courses by tag
- Sort - sort by last updated, date created, or title
- Archive filter - show active courses, archived courses, or all
Creating courses
Section titled “Creating courses”Click the New button to create a blank course, generate one with AI, import a SCORM package, or start a batch import.
Course actions
Section titled “Course actions”Each course card has a menu with options to preview, duplicate, archive, delete, manage translations, and share. You can also add tags directly from the card.
Course editor
Section titled “Course editor”The course editor is where you build your course content. It has three main areas.
Toolbar
Section titled “Toolbar”The toolbar runs across the top of the editor and contains:
- Back arrow - return to the course overview
- Lesson switcher - dropdown to jump between sections and lessons
- Lesson title - click to rename the current lesson
- Save status - shows whether your changes are saved
- Find - search within the course
- Version history - view and restore previous versions
- Preview - toggle the preview panel
- Publish - publish your course
Block sidebar
Section titled “Block sidebar”The left sidebar contains two tabs:
- Blocks - all 18 block types organized into four categories (Content, Structure, Interactive, Cards). Click a block type to add it to the current lesson.
- Templates - your saved block templates. Click to insert a copy.
The sidebar can be pinned open or set to appear on hover.
Canvas
Section titled “Canvas”The center canvas displays your lesson content as a vertical stack of blocks. Click any block to edit it. Drag blocks to reorder them. Use the ”+” dividers between blocks to insert new blocks at a specific position.
Preview panel
Section titled “Preview panel”Toggle the preview panel from the toolbar to see a live preview of your course as learners will see it. The preview updates as you make changes.
Version history
Section titled “Version history”Slate tracks your edits and lets you manage versions:
- Snapshots - create a manual backup of the current state
- Restore - revert to a previous snapshot
- Discard draft - remove unpublished changes and revert to the last published version
