Creating Your First Course

There are several ways to create a course in Slate. Start from a blank canvas, generate a draft with AI, or import an existing SCORM package.

  1. From your dashboard, click the New button in the top-right corner
  2. Choose how you want to start:
    • Blank Course - creates an empty course with one section and one lesson
    • Generate with AI - opens a chat where you describe your course and AI builds it
    • Import - upload a SCORM package from Rise or Slate
    • Batch Import - import up to 25 packages at once (Pro plan)

Click Blank Course and Slate creates a new course titled “Untitled Course” with a default section and lesson. You’re taken directly to the editor to start building.

Click Generate with AI to open the AI chat. Describe your course topic, target audience, and any requirements. When AI has enough information, click Generate to create a full course draft with sections, lessons, and content blocks. You can preview the draft before importing it to your library.

AI course generation costs 1,250 AI credits.

Click Import to upload a .zip file exported from Rise or Slate. Slate auto-detects the source format and converts the content into native Slate blocks. See Single Import for details on what gets converted.

Once you’re in the course editor:

  1. Click the lesson title at the top of the editor to rename it
  2. Add a block from the sidebar on the left - click any block type to append it to the lesson
  3. Edit the block by clicking on it in the canvas
  4. Reorder blocks by dragging them up or down
  5. Preview your course by clicking the Preview button in the toolbar

Changes save automatically as you work. The save indicator in the toolbar shows whether your latest changes have been saved.

To build out your course:

  • Add lessons from the course overview (click the back arrow in the toolbar)
  • Add sections to organize lessons into groups
  • Insert blocks between existing blocks using the ”+” divider that appears between blocks

See Course Structure for more on organizing sections and lessons.
