Scoring & Results

Slate calculates assessment scores automatically based on learner answers and reports results to your LMS when using SCORM or xAPI exports.

Each knowledge check question in an assessment section is worth one point. The score is calculated as:

Score = (Correct Answers / Total Questions) x 100

A learner must answer a multiple choice or multiple select question fully correct to earn the point. For fill-in-the-blank questions, the learner’s response must match one of the accepted answers.

You can define the passing threshold in two ways:

  • Percentage - learner must score at or above a percentage (e.g., 80% means 8 of 10 correct)
  • Question count - learner must answer a specific number of questions correctly (e.g., 5 of 10)

Configure this in the assessment settings dialog. The percentage option uses a slider with 5% increments.

Control how many times a learner can take the assessment:

  • Unlimited (set to 0) - learners can retake as many times as needed
  • Limited (1 to 99) - after using all attempts without passing, the assessment locks and the learner cannot retake it

Each attempt is recorded independently. When a learner retakes the assessment, they start fresh with a new set of answers.

When enabled, question order is shuffled each time a learner starts a new attempt. This reduces the ability to memorize answer positions across retakes. The randomized order is preserved within each attempt for consistency.

After completing an assessment, learners can see:

  • Per-question feedback (if enabled) - correct or incorrect feedback shown after each question submission
  • Results screen (if enabled) - final score as a percentage, pass or fail status, and the option to retake if attempts remain

Both options can be toggled independently in the assessment settings.

When you export your course as SCORM, xAPI, or cmi5, assessment results are reported to your LMS:

  • Score - the learner’s percentage score
  • Pass/fail status - whether the learner met the passing threshold
  • Completion - whether the learner finished the assessment
  • Interactions - individual question responses (question type, learner answer, correct answer)

Multiple choice and multiple select questions are reported as choice interaction types. Fill-in-the-blank questions are reported as fill-in interaction types.

Assessment results can factor into overall course completion. Slate supports three completion modes:

ModeHow completion works
All blocksCourse completes when all lessons are viewed (assessment not required to pass)
Knowledge checksCourse completes when all knowledge checks are attempted
ManualLearner manually marks the course as complete
